On August 15th, a Belgian Holiday, my family and I made a small day trip to Utrecht to explore this small but beautiful city. Due to a lack of preparation we only arrived in Utrecht around 1.30 p.m. and went straight for lunch. I had already looked up some restaurants in the car, on our way to Utrecht, and stumbled across this beautifully decorated restaurant called Ruby Rose.
(The homemade iced tea with basil and lemon is very tasty)
The thing about this restaurant is that you (kind of) don't decide what you eat. You just pick one of the 4 platters and get a bunch of small dishes on a stand. The 4 different options are; fish, meat, vegetarian or a mix of the three. As I am vegetarian, but my family isn't we just went for the mixed platter for 3 people (ā¬17 pp). Some of the dishes on it were;
- Risotto of asparagus
- Different cheeses
- Different hams
- Burrata cheese with strawberries
- Watermelon salad with tomatoes, goat cheese and black olives
- Pizza with 4 cheeses
- Focaccia bread
- Seabass carpaccio
- Jamon croquettes
We all liked this concept very much as everybody's taste buds are different. With this idea everyone will find something on the platter that he/she likes most. In our case we all liked the same thing the best, which was the risotto with green asparagus. It was delightful and very fresh, and the combination of the different flavours was just perfect. Another item that I liked very much was the cheese with truffle in it. If you have been reading my blogs for a while now you know that I am a big lover of truffle, so ofcourse this cheese was like heaven to me. My mom really loved the watermelon salad, which was very fresh and juicy, she even recreated it again the day after because she liked it that much. A last favourite was the steak tartare, for my dad. The pizza was good too, though my mom and I didn't like that it had a sweet taste too it, as normally pizza is more salty.
The seabass carpaccio was sliced a little but too thickly, which both my parents didn't appreciate very much. It also took a bit long for the platter to arrive to our table, knowing that it already is (kind of) a predetermined menu. Nonetheless, we did enjoy our meal very much and the service was also good.
We loved this restaurant because it was situated in a more relaxed part of the city and also because of the beautiful interior (even though we sat outside). Inside, you have this big bar situated in the center of the restaurant. Around the bar you have these lovely flowers hanging from the top and the tables in the room are also small and cosy with an antique look.
I will definitely go back to Ruby Rose in the future when I'm back in Utrecht, just to sit inside and experience it in another way. The food and service is also great and I love the concept of having different dishes as one meal, as I am mostly the one who can't decide what she will have for lunch/dinner. I would recommend though, that a platter for 2 people is enough for 3 people to eat from. Our platter was made for 3 people but we were far from finishing it which was a pitty as you have to throw away all this good food.
A bientƓt!
