My first time at Sans Gène

Sans Gène is a restaurant in Zonhoven, the village I live in, that has been around for some time already. I had driven past it numerous times before but never went out of my way to test it out, until last week. From the outside it always looked very cosy as they have these strings full of lightbulbs hanging over their courtyard, what to me is such a lovely decoration piece. The parking of the restaurant is also, always packed, so I just had to go and check it out.

Don't get me wrong, this isn't an amazingly special nor fancy restaurant as it may seem from my description. It is just a small farm house that was transformed into a restaurant. On their menu you can find all the Belgian Classics such as Stoofvlees and Vidée, but also some pastas and salads. They have a menu of suggestions too, whereon you can find some extra dishes.

My family was in the mood for some good old "Stoofvlees" (€17) so they all ordered it. I, on the other hand have never liked Stoofvlees and since I'm a vegetarian I also can't eat it anymore. I went for a duo of Cannelloni (€19,50).

Before we got our food we got a small starter from the house which was pearl couscous with different vegetables in it. This starter was absolutely delicious, very basic, but the flavours were very fresh to the mouth and it also was the perfect portion to get us started.

Then, our dishes came to the table. The Stoofvlees filled the entire plate, exactly how it should be, and the fries came on the side. My dish also looked delicious and I loved the amount of sauce in it.

Believe me or not, but I finished my dish by the last bite, which in normal circumstances would probably never happen. I guess I was just very hungry and enjoying the dish too much. Same goes for the rest of my family, there wasn't a single bite left of the Stoofvlees, so I assume it was pretty good too.

Sans Gene is definitely a good restaurant for when you want to enjoy the good old Belgian Classics for a very good price. The staff is also super friendly and the interior is pretty cosy as well.
