Eating vegan ribs at "De Blauwe Schuit"

When you're a vegetarian it is not always easy to find a restaurant for you and all your non-vegetarian friends, that does not only serve a plain pasta. I do admit, nowadays it is easier to find a restaurant that serves at least one vegetarian dish, but the majority of the time it is just a "veggie" pasta with a bunch of vegetables. As much as I love pasta, I'm just not ALWAYS in the mood for a pasta. So when I was looking for a restaurant for my friends and I in Leuven, I found this place called "De Blauwe Schuit" that serves a bunch of non-veggie dishes but also a handful of creative veggie and vegan dishes. One of those dishes being Vegan Ribs, something I had not seen before and wanted to try out as soon as I saw it.

De Blauwe Schuit is a Belgian Bistro located in the city center of Leuven, very close to the Grand Place. As I already said above, they have a pretty wide selection of dishes and 4 vegetarian dishes. I went, together with 3 of my friends for a fun girl's dinner and this is what we ordered:

- Beef burger with cheese and bacon €16,90

- Fish casserole with mashed potatoes €21,50

- Sol Meunière €21,50

- Vegan ribs with potatoes €18,90

The vegan ribs were made of tofoe, which gave them a completely different consistency than actual ribs would have. Personally, I think it is very hard to prepare tofoe in a good and delicious way. These ribs were okay, the sauce that was brushed on them definitely made them taste 10 times better, I just didn't like the consistency of the ribs. Overall I would give them a 7 out of 10; love the effort to offer something different, but not a huge fan of the execution, I would make them of something different than tofoe.

The Sol was good but didn't have a lot of "flesh" around it, which for me is something you can expect when you are eating fish at a place other than the sea side. The fish casserole was very delicious, though a bit much to finish in one go. Lastly, the burger was also approved of, but my friend would have preferred a bit less sauce to make it less messy. Also the size of the burger was not ideal to be able to eat it with your hands.

Overall, we were pretty satisfied with our visit to De Blauwe Schuit. We did have to wait a long time before getting our food, but the staff was very friendly. De Blauwe Schuit is the perfect place to go to when you are looking for a place where everyone can find something to eat without spending too much money.
